ACON4 Tournament - LA

Jeff Zhang from NY – wins the North American qualifier!
This past weekend saw some of the best WC3 players in North America compete for their chance to win a top prize of $2,000 and an all expense paid trip to Shanghai to represent their country and the potential to win a new car in the International round.
Starting on Saturday April 17th, players from across the US and Canada assembled at gaming centers in Los Angeles, Texas, Colorado, Florida, New York, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver to compete in the ACON4 North American championships. The top 3 competitors from each of these regions went home at the end of the day with either an
ATI 9800XT 256MB video card, an
Abit IC7-MAX3 motherboard equipped with
512MB of Kingston memory, or an
ATI 9600 video card.

Abit selected
Internet PC Café – Nuritech in Los Angeles as the top destination for those competitors from the South West. PC Café in Gardena has a reputation for hosting great tournaments, including the
International Halo event that they hosted on February 18, 2004 and has also been selected to host the CPL West Coast Qualifier and MOHAA International championships scheduled for May 15th, the weekend after E3.
Saturday morning was windy and rainy, which is relatively unusual for LA. But from the comfort offered inside PC Café, they focused on the task at hand: eliminating their competition. The players arrived at 9AM, having traveled from as far away as San Francisco. It was a reunion of sorts, as most players knew each other from previous online battles and other tournaments. When the smoke cleared about 9 hours later, there were three men left standing. Matt “etched[pG] Carrier took home first place and the ATI 9800XT. Second place was taken by Johnny [pG]CareLess Huang who won an Abit IC7Max 3 motherboard outfitted with 512Mbytes of Kingston HyperX memory. David Malka won 3rd place and although he took home an ATI 9600 video card, he was eliminated from the contest and the shot at the big enchilada: the $2,000 and free trip to China.
