Abit
The Home of Soft Jumpy
Upon arriving at Abit's booth, we ran to their wall of motherboards. Along with many of the boards that had already been released, there were few that had just been released, and some that even took us by complete surprise. In particular, the KS7 was what seemed to be the ace in Abit's hole. This board is based on the SiS 745 chipset, successor to the immensely popular SiS 735. We were wondering when someone other than ECS was going to make a board out of a chipset that seems to have everything going for it, including an insanely low price. The buying public ate up the ECS K7S5A, despite the lack of any overclocking features. This new board from Abit should appear around January; knowing them, it should be an overclocker's dream come true.

Another new board from Abit is the KR7A. This would be based off of the Via KT266A chipset, the second revision of the KT266. It seems as though Abit seems to have caught onto VIA's little trend of making two versions of the same chipset. Note that there is no board called the KR7, instead there is only the single KR7A. VIA seems to be on the kick of producing a first run chipset, and then cleaning up the loose ends a few months down the road with a better version of the same design. Boards based off of the KT266A seem to be performing rather well, and we expect no less from Abit's offering.

In the other product scene from Abit, we have the usual lineup of GeForce cards, their Siluro lineup. On a rather odd note, Abit has begun manufacture of a relatively high-end speaker setup. The Abit SP70 sports Dolby Digital decoding as well as the ability to decode DTS. The satellites and center channel are identical and follow in the tradition of other computer speaker setups. The decoding hardware is all housed in the subwoofer. Abit also has a lower end version of the speaker setup; removing the decoding hardware cut costs. What could this mean? Well, Abit has been creating and selling complete PC systems in Asia for the better part of the year. An expanded product line could mean that a complete Abit system may be coming over to the states soon.
