For anyone craving more speed for their computing pleasure, it's that time of year again. All of the hardware companies are makin' the big push towards the new year, and as they all know, with the slates wiped clean, computer users everywhere are gonna be looking to get their jollies out of a few more megahertz. What makes 1999 even more exciting is the fact that the competition is really starting to sizzle! AMD is pushing ahead with new processors that should finally start challenging Intel, and that's really gonna make the big bully Intel start to sweat!

Well, you're right about one thing, the competition is definitely starting to heat up. In short, both AMD and Intel have laid out their initial roadmaps for the new year, and they're eyeing each other like hawks, trying to anticipate the other's sneaky, underhanded moves. I really don't think Intel has much to worry about in AMD at this point. They're already established, and their mind-share in the market is unsurpassed. Don't get me wrong, AMD has made some great strides with the K6-2, and 3DNow has proven to the industry that SIMD doesn't have to be a flop (read: MMX), but it certainly takes a lot more than just some good numbers to sway popular opinion.

I might not be a CPU enthusiast (freak), but I do understand business, and when it comes to technology, there's very little loyalty (unless your computer is one-piece and transparent blue). Intel's got deep pockets, but they're bound to get lazy, and the minute that happens, someone else is gonna have an open window to pounce. AMD's 3Dnow! technology is just the beginning - it shows that AMD is really innovating, and as people accept the fact that there's REAL competition in the market, they'll be much more willing to move forward to the new performance leader. Have you even bothered to open your eyes in the last month?
