Introduction
Computex is like no other trade show in the world. Maybe it has something to do with the Chinese hospitality. Maybe it’s the huge effort put forward by the leading PC manufacturers to make you feel at home. Whatever it is, I’m always sad when the show comes to end and it’s time to go home.
Like most industries, the computer manufacturing business is a small community. By this I mean that everyone seems to know everyone else. And although the competition between manufacturers is intense, in Taiwan they all treat each other with respect.
For those who work and live in Taiwan, their typical workday is usually 10-12+ hours. The employees all share a sense of duty and dedication to doing the best job they can and it shows. At the end of the day, everyone likes to go out and socialize and it’s easy to do with a variety of great restaurants and watering holes. Since Taipei is a relatively small area, inevitably they all end up partying in a handful of the favorites, like Carnegies, the Brass Monkey, Brown Sugar, or even Luxy, one of the hottest clubs in Asia.
When originally conceived, the FiringSquad Invitational Tournament was meant to give the top PC manufacturers a chance to really show off their engineering prowess. It’s one thing to mod and overclock a PC with off the shelf components. It’s another to do it with technology that hasn’t even been released to the press or the general public. This year the participants really went above and beyond their duty and rolled out some technology that was just awesome. Fortunately we better anticipated the power demands this year and had the venue roll out an extra 500Amp circuit to handle all the hardware on display.
