Even More Games
Stargate Worlds: Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment announced plans a few months ago to release a MMORPG based on yet another long running TV-movie sci-fi franchise. The game itself is said to be in early development and as such was not shown in any form at E3 2006. Hopefully this game will make an appearance next year and won’t go the way of Stargate SG-1: The Alliance, the cancelled first person shooter title.
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl Here’s a game that’s rivaling Duke Nukem Forever for its length of development. The sci-fi apocalypse shooter game has been underway for several years now and was last shown at E3 2004. The developers at GSC Gameworld sent out a note saying that STALKER would be shown behind closed doors at E3 2006 but we were told by its publisher THQ that the game was not being shown after all. So what happened? We are not quite sure yet but we have our fingers crossed that we will soon get more info about the long awaited game.
Killzone PS3: Oh boy. Here is a stickler for you. Without a doubt the most impressive looking trailer at Sony’s initial PS3 press conference at E3 last year was for Killzone, a PS3 version of Guerilla Games’s PS2 sci-fi shooter. The detail. The effects. The explosion….the fact that it was just a pre-rendered CGI clip. So with a year in development we should have seen a real gameplay clip from the game at E3 2006, right? Nope. Not only was there nothing shown of Killzone PS3 at the expo this year but Sony representatives refused to even talk about the game to us or anyone else. That’s not a good sign. Will the game finally appear at E3 2007. Your guess is as good as ours.
Society: Stardock announced and showed an early build of their upcoming massively multiplayer RTS game at E3 2005. The game, which is planned to be completely free to download and play, hasn’t been heard of much since then but that’s understandable since Stardock was busy completing and releasing their space strategy game Galactic Civilizations II. Still we were hoping for a new look at Society at E3 this year but it was not to be. Will this free RTS game be revealed more fully in the future. We hope so as Stardock has an excellent track record.
Marvel and DC Comics MMORPGs: On the one side you have Microsoft who announced plans several months ago to develop a MMORPG based on the Marvel comic book universe (Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men). On the other side you have Sony Online who announced several months ago a plan to release an MMORPG based on the DC comic book universe (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman). We were hoping for some kind of glimpse into either or both games both nether showed up at E3 2006 this time. Will the big Marvel vs DC battle be waged next year at the expo? Get your Secret Infinite war cap ready to go just in case.
Castle Wolfenstein: Microsoft announced this upcoming latest game in the long running WWII shooter series at their X05 event last October. The Raven-Nerve-id Software title will once again be published by Activision and while a few art pieces from X05 surfaced we were hoping for more info and maybe some real screenshots at E3 2006. Not this time, however. But we are still hoping to shoot some zombie Nazis before too long.
Snow: Here’s an interesting situation. At E3 2005, 2K Games showed a playable demo of Snow, a strategy game with a comic book look about you controlling the drug trade. The game, developed by Frog City, looked promising and was due out in early 2006 but since E3 2005 there has been no info on the game’s progress at all. Repeated attempts by FiringSquad during and after E3 2006 to find out the status of both the game and Frog City (the developer’s web site is down) were given a “no comment’ by 2K Games PR reps. We have a sinking suspicion that this game isn’t going to make E3 2007.
