Q3Test for Macs First!

It's not what you think, really?

What was the meaning of this? Windows is by far the largest platform for Quake players, isn't it? Well, that same day, id lead programmer John Carmack updated his .plan file, outlining the rationale behind a Mac-first test release.
We want to get a lot of people playing with the test to find bugs and
offer well thought out suggestions, but there are classes of bugs and
suggestions that emerge in each order of magnitude of exposed testers.
If a given bug is going to show up when a thousand people have looked
at it, but we had released it to a hundred thousand people, then we are
going to have a lot of duplication to wade through.
The mac testers will find some obvious problems.
We will fix them.
The later releases will be better.
Even if we had the windows distribution ready to go right now, I would
still seriously consider releasing one of the mac or linux versions first
because it will make our tracking a lot easier.
Kenn
Well, that made enough sense to me. Instead of releasing the demo to the whole world and getting bombarded by millions of people reporting the same obvious bugs, releasing first to a smaller audience gives them a more controlled environment to monitor.
It also means that by the time the test is released for Windows, it will be a much more stable product. I think it's wise to point out about now that regardless of the ongoing work being performed on Q3A, the test is just a test. It's not a demo, and it's not shareware. It's just a quick and efficient way for id to get valuable "beta-test" feedback, while giving the Quake junkies a quick fix at the same time!
Can't let the Mac owners have all the fun!
Thresh
Well, just because Q3test was first released on a Mac didn't mean that we had to sit there and wait for the Win32 port! In the interest of providing id with detailed test reports, we brought it upon ourselves to get our hands on a nice fat G3 to play with.
