Don’t believe the hype! But if you can accept that F.E.A.R. isn’t going to scare you out of your drawers, you’ll enjoy one of the best shooters of the past couple of years. Its production values are right up there with Half-Life 2, the plot is well-developed, and the artificial intelligence poses a real challenge. Some of the gimmicks are a little tired, and the spooks are awfully generic, especially the hair-faced little girl, who’s so ubiquitous these days that she evokes more groans of frustration than frights. Yet the overall design is strong enough to overcome these flaws.
So, if you want to be scared this Halloween, rent The Exorcist or think about how much it’s going to cost to heat your home this coming winter. Don’t play F.E.A.R. But if you want to enjoy a good, if derivative, shooter with great enemy AI and loads of tension and atmosphere, give it a try. Description:F.E.A.R.
