Ballistics Report

Pros

Gameplay. The only thing we liked about Return to Castle Wolfenstein was the multiplayer. Battlefield 1942 improves on that and cuts out that singleplayer junk (for the most part.) No complaints.
Graphics. They do everything right. Modeling, animation, textures, even terrain and the scale of the world feel proper.
Value. Talk about addictive! The multiplayer is for gamers on a college budget, where if you can have only one game per semester, it has to be good.
Interface. Very simple and intuitive controls for all the units out there. Considering that some games have a hard enough time making a single type of combat accessible, this is very impressive.
Design. The maps are chosen with care and designed with a lot of detail in mind. The Bulge and Kharkov are oozing with character. We think the demos did injustice to the final game in this respect, as they showed light, airy, blue-skied venues as opposed to the grimmer fields of battle. Classes are balanced and useful, as are vehicles.

Cons

Singleplayer. It’s a joke. Anybody who would buy BF1942 for this obviously doesn’t have internet access, never mind reads our reviews. Still, the singleplayer isn’t something we’d engage in even if the cable went out.
Performance. Not as bad as it was during the multiplayer demo, we still wish there was some way to squeeze out a few more frames per second. EA should have marketed and released the game for Christmas, when more people could actually run it at acceptable detail levels.
Interface. Yeah, it was a Pro too. But aside from what we listed in the Pros, our experiences with the interface range from “unimpressive” to “infuriating”. Do I really need to wait 15 seconds to see if a server is full?

 Random Fact
The German 88 was the most versatile gun of the war. It served anti-air, anti-tank, tank and anti-infantry roles. The 88 was deadly in all its configurations. Its anti-tank role was reinforced when anti-air guns were forced to defend themselves from tanks… and won! It was also the only consistent method Rommel had of destroying British Matilda tanks during his desert campaign, since his own tanks didn’t have enough firepower.
