The Mac-10 is the most inaccurate SMG in the game. The screenshot of the bullet-spread actually looks much better than how the gun actually performs in most situations (when you'll most likely be on the move). Don't even think about using this gun for any confrontation that isn't up-close and personal. Even crouching doesn't really help.
If it isn't already clear, you should definitely pass on the Mac-10. Although it can take out enemies fairly quickly, it just isn't as accurate as the other SMGs. Your best bet with this gun is to stay on the move since keeping still won't do anything for your accuracy. Dance around and fire full auto (without bursts). If you're lucky you may just get a head shot.

The UMP is another gun that is a little bit better than its popularity would suggest. It is the second most powerful SMG, and it keeps a very respectable spread using .45 caliber ammo. The reason it is able to maintain a tight spread is because of its exceptionally slow rate of fire. This slow rate of fire, however, is also the reason why most people consider the UMP to be inferior to the MP5. It doesn't help that the UMP has a reload time that is nearly double that of the TMP.
If you're carrying a UMP, you definitely do not want to wind up in a close-range firefight against an MP5. The UMP just can't fire fast enough to keep up with the H&K. You must keep your distance, and take advantage of the fact that the UMP remains accurate even after 10 rounds or so into the clip. One full clip from a UMP can be separated into two or three bursts in most cases. Look at the screenshot to see the tight shot progression for the first 8-10 rounds.
While the UMP may be the best SMG for long-range battles, it's still no match for a rifle. Consider the UMP to be an inexpensive, well-rounded gun that is decent in most situations but the best in none.
