Weapons

Stuff to blow people up with

OK I've blabbed long enough. What weapons are featured? There's going to be a grand total of 10 gun/laser weapons and 10 missile weapons. Most of the gun weapons will feed off your energy supply, so your energy must be constantly replenished. Some will suck energy faster than others, so you'll need to keep an eye on that as well as your shields status.

White tentacles of death

Of course you'll have standard lasers but Outrange included a couple noteworthy ones that aren't your usual space sim gun. One is the mass driver. Wing Commander players remember the mass driver as a slow moving but hard hitting weapon. In Descent 3, the mass driver is a sniping, instant hit weapon, much like the Quake 2 rail gun or the Tribes laser rifle. Another cool gun was the napalm gun. This gun acts as a dual flame thrower. If you accidentally set yourself a light, your sidekick guide bot can put you out with the fire extinguisher. We're loathe to give too much away but there's no overlooking the Omega cannon. This is an extremely short range weapon that holds out two tendrils of energy in front of your ship. One or both of the "tentacles" will lock on to anything in your view; enemy shields get rapidly depleted as a result.

The Black Shark missile leaves a nasty impression

You can't have a fighting ship without missiles can you? Descent 3 includes a full complement of 10 different missiles. Besides the standard straight rocket and homing missile, there are a few that stick in my mind as pretty interesting. One is the Napalm rocket, which sets enemies on fire like the napalm gun. Another is the guided missile, which is basically like a remote control toy. Firing it takes you to missile cam, and you steer the missile as it's propelled forward (slowly) until you ram it into something or it runs out of fuel. The ultimate missile is called the black shark. This bad boy starts off with a huge explosion, then creates a gravity effect that sucks in nearby robots and ships and pounds them into bits. Check out the pic.

 Quick Facts
The Vauss gun AKA Vulcan cannon was one of the best guns in Descent 1 and 2. It returns in D3, but I'm disappointed that it no longer fires on center and the sound effects for it have deteriorated. The sounds in the first two were so much better for that weapon.
