Demigod scores quite a few points for having really addictive gameplay that is both strategic and fun, yet also allows you to customize your character throughout matches. Battles are fast and furious, but you never feel overwhelmed or pulled in too many directions at once. We loved the unique characters and abilities, as well as the inherent strategy that comes from knowing what to do with your spoils of war. Should you spend gold on your character to purchase better armor or buy some citadel upgrades that will benefit the entire team? It’s up to you, but making the right choice can turn the tide of battle.
Demigod also features some fantastic visuals that really highlight all the tiny, minute details that the character artists have put in. Lighting and shadows look great, while spell effects explode on the screen with great vibrancy. Audio is well done too and excellent voice acting grants each demigod a unique voice and personality.
Unfortunately, there’s no real story to be told and the AI bots will only hold your attention for a short while. If you aren’t particularly fond of multiplayer gaming, then Demigod probably isn’t for you. Also, the game only ships with 8 maps that lack variety in a lot of areas, such as layout. Stardock has said they are planning releasing more maps down the road, but for now you are left with what has shipped with the game.
Demigod can be a lot of fun overall, and we really enjoyed taking each of its diverse characters out onto the field of battle. But Gas Powered Games just needs to add a little map variety and VoIP, otherwise things tend to get a somewhat bland once you’ve played the same map over and over. We’re really interested to see the level of support they provide for the game down the road however. If Stardock’s history with Sins of a Solar Empire and Galactic Civilizations is any indicator, then we think Demigod’s future is pretty bright.
