Out of the mines

Descent rocked the gaming world when it first arrived - around the same time as Doom. In many ways, it was the first true 3D shooter game, one where players had to worry about enemies attacking them from any and every possible angle. And unlike other action games at the time (like Doom which had auto aim for the up and down axis), Descent forced players to be able to aim and fire at any angle. If Doom didn't make you nauseated then the claustrophobic twisting and turning of Descent's tunnels did! But players fought through the pain and the nausea because Descent was such an innovative, if repetitive, game. Descent 2 brought more advances, with improved enemy robot AI, and a "guide bot" side kick, who could help you find your way through the twisting, confusing mine shafts.

What's new?

So what does Descent 3 bring to the table that's new? First of all, you're no longer restricted to cramped indoor areas as you were in the first two games of the series. In Descent 3 you're going to be flying your craft through the same mine-shaft type of levels but also out of the claustrophobia and into the "outdoors." Secondly, the missions no longer consist of "find the blue key, open blue door, find the red key, open red door, find exit." Lather, rinse, repeat. The designers of Descent 3 recognized this weakness in earlier titles, so they worked to try and create some very interesting levels and force you to do a bit more than just run, gun, and open up locked doors all the time.
