Character Classes
Character Classes
Riding the wave of the newest trend of having multiple character classes (ala Quake 3:Arena), you also have a choice of the standard fare light, medium, and heavy class units, though they are not labeled as such:
Scout: The fastest moving unit in the game, with a beefed up range of sight for reconnaissance. Its main weapon is the plasma repeater, which has a high rate of fire, but inflicting little damage per shot. The scouts are the most common class to use for offense in Gunball (which we'll get into in the next section), Flag stealers in CTF, and recon.
Commando: The commando is your all-around unit, with average shields, vision, and speed. His main weapon, the plasma rifle, does a fair amount of damage, and increases the longer you have the target in your sights. Commandos are like "half-backs" in soccer (football as everyone else in the world calls is) -- they are useful in almost any situation due to their well-roundedness.
Heavy Gunner: The Arnold Schwartznegger of the Fireteam world, this bad boy is the slowest but strongest unit in the game. It has an extremely short line of sight, which means you're going to have to work together with your scout teammates to use it to its fullest effectiveness. Along with heavy armor, the Heavy Gunner also has an explosive main weapon, the plasma cannon. Much like a rocket launcher, the cannon fires out a projectile, in this case a ball of plasma, which explodes on contact. Do note that the splash damage will injure anything within its blast radius, which includes both you and your teammates!
The heavy gunner also is the most commonly used unit for defense in Gunball, since you need a strong unit to repel the incoming onslaught of attackers.
Quake 3:Arena is also a multiplayer-only game. It will feature three classes, from
light, medium, to heavy. The lightest class will move at the speed of the current
Quake marine, the medium will run at Quake II speed, and the heavy will be some fat-ass, buffed-up,
beefcake who won't be able to move a whole lot, but should be able to inflict
and take a serious amount of damage.
