Attack of the Clones

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s 2002 right? The Winter Olympics and the World Cup happen this year, yeah? Funny, because after playing Gore I could swear it’s 1999, year of the Quake 2 clones. I seriously wonder if game companies know it’s a lot harder to sell a game with a pretty box and catchy slogans now than it was five years ago. Gamers are much more informed than they used to be. The gaming press loves to milk previews, screenshots, and interviews. It’s a wonder anyone buys any games anymore with all the over exposure games get lately.

What’s the formula for a clone? DNA and stem cells aside, game companies only need to copy the general look and feel of a game to produce a superficial clone. Start with a first person view, add a rocket launcher, some sort of quirky and violent melee weapon, a few shoot-em-up single player levels, and a dash of multiplayer Deathmatch and Capture the Flag and viola, you have yourself an “adrenaline pumping thrill-ride”.

The Story

Gore uses one of the most tired and cliché story-telling devices – at the end of the game you wake up and realize it was all a dream. Give me a break. A third-grader doped up on Ritalin could have come up with something better than that. They’re lucky the story is pathetic to begin with, but I just have to laugh at this. It’s hard for me to believe that game companies have to use such unoriginal and patronizing methods in games these days.
