Enter the Clans

Clan History

They are the descendants of Kerensky, with exotic names like Jade Falcon, Wolf, Smoke Jaguar, Steel Viper, Ghost Bear, Nova Cat. Each is different from any other. They all profess allegiance to the memory of Aleksandr Kerensky, and his son Nicholas (the man truly responsible for most of the transition to this type of society), but interpret their words differently. The Clans are a genetically engineered, selectively bred, caste-based meritocracy (higher achievement leads to higher station.) At the top are their warriors - always first and foremost. Everything within Clan society is decided by Trials - which usually involve some kind of combat. They were supposed to be the perfect society that Kerensky envisioned, and maybe they are - just not in Inner Sphere eyes. Seeing the Inner Sphere's weakness, they descend upon it and wage a brutal campaign - a race to Earth. Winner take all. With their superior technology, armies and warriors, it seems to the Clans that their only opposition will be themselves.

The sleeping giant awakens

Unfortunately for them, the Inner Sphere wasn't blown over by the sudden wind - in fact, the mighty challenge woke it up. From early overruns, to easy wins, through hard-fought 'victories', the Clans were being slowed, then stopped. Finally, after several years of this exhausting war, a Trial was setup - a battle which would decide the fate of the Inner Sphere. If the Inner Sphere wins, then the Clans stop all offensive actions for 10 years. If the Clans win, they take all. Considering that it would make for a rather dull game with only one side, you can guess that the Inner Sphere is still around, and not only that - they have also utterly annihilated Clan Smoke Jaguar in a mere 2 years (*sigh* my personal favourite.)

Fast forward

It is now the year 3061, and all that remains of Clan Smoke Jaguar is their Khan, the remnants of his forces, and a planet. The Smoke Jaguar will never be truly considered dead and defeated by its peers until their Khan is slain and their genetic legacy destroyed (at least, that is what the Star League believes.) Once that is accomplished, the Clans will probably realize that the new Star League is not to be trifled with, and that maybe co-existence is preferable to war. Well, that's the hope, anyway.

 Random Fact
The best 'Mech in MechWarrior 1 was the BattleMaster. It made a re-appearance in MechWarrior 2 as an easter egg in the form of the BattleMaster IIc.
