Wolfenstein?
A game with little, to no, hype. I think that might sum up the prerelease days of Mortyr. Having to live in the shadow of such anticipated games as Quake3 and Unreal Tournament didn't leave much room for an independently created game. There have been a few games that stand out for some reason, for example Kingpin, with its hiring of hoodlums and profuse use of expletives. I guess Mortyr should have added some Nazi nudie bars for more exposure. This game was produced in Europe, which could have contributed to its nonexistent showing in its beta days. Combine that with almost not having a publisher and you have a game that might not have existed in North America. That would have been a likely scenario if Interplay hadn't stepped in and picked up the rights to Mortyr, which were dropped after Ubisoft refused to publish it.

A lot of people have been saying this game is pretty much a Wolfenstein rehash. I'd have to say they aren't too off the ball in labeling it that. Mortyr entails the same concept that Wolfenstein had, kill the Nazis and get the key. The graphics are considerably better, but after a decade that just isn't saying too much. The developers did make their own engine to the game, and it didn't turn out all that bad. But since this game is pretty much about killing, let's get to the massacring.
What's This About?
You, the son of a Nazi officer, are sent back in time to kill the inventor of the time machine that helped Nazi Germany win WWII (But how? I mean if you kill the inventor of the time machine how do you… oh no I'm getting dizzy again.) As usual something goes wrong (this is where you come in) and you end up in some cathedral with a knife in your hand and a SS guard in front of you. Pretty precarious circumstances eh?

Mortyr is unique in that it takes you through two timelines. For the first part of the game you are in Nazi Germany in 1944, the second half deals with the Nazi empire in 2093. In the game, the world is going horribly wrong in the future. You thought the Nazis ruling the world was bad enough? It appears that the Nazis have inadvertently screwed up the world and caused strange weather patterns along with all sorts of foreboding stuff. The game takes you through some pretty cool places like U-boat pens and V-2 Rocket facilities. Can't be said that the game doesn't give you a variety of places to play in.
