Storyline

Weaker Storyline Kill! Kill!

FPS games are notorious for worthless plots, and Mortyr is no exception. Actually let me rephrase that, the plots themselves might have some promise, it's just the way they are presented throughout the game that is bad. These types of games started out as mindless killing and after nearly a decade they haven't strayed too far, with certain notable exceptions. One can't really complain about Mortyr in that respect, since even the greatest FPS games barely have a storyline worth following. These guys have provided more than most other FPS games in that the story unfolds as you play the level, as opposed to the paragraph in the manual followed by nothing more.

Innie or Outtie?

The story is propelled, or shall we say prodded, forward by little notes and folders you happen to find on desks around the levels. What I found a bit strange was that these big wig scientists would leave their notes in totally random areas. It would be one thing to find them in a lab, but they are just strewn across the levels. Mortyr could have used a bit more creativity in the way the story was presented to the player. Seeing these fabled scientists would have been a treat. Hell, seeing anything other than a Nazi would have been nice, and no, the attack dogs don't quite count. Sure I said one can't really complain about FPS games and storylines, I couldn't help myself. Rest easy knowing that I would do this to Quake just as easily if I were reviewing it today.

Nice flaming poster

There are no cut scenes other than the intro, and the "outro", as they call it. This didn't sit very well with me at all, because I usually like to have some sort of instant gratification after I finish a level. It doesn't have to be every level, but at least after I complete a major portion. This almost pushes me back to the days of Nintendo, playing games like Contra for hours on end only to get a little text message saying you won. I didn't expect too much from a cartridge that didn't have a meg of memory but these guys didn't even come close to filling the disk. The notes are hardly compelling enough to keep me playing, with other games these days having cut scenes and big shiny things to look at everywhere. Call me a lab rat, but I like to be rewarded when I finish something.

 Random Fact
Tiger I tanks, in the Nazi army, were reported to have kill ratios of 1:17. They had 88mm cannons and weighed over 60 tons. Allied forces feared any German tank column, because most could not tell the difference between the various German tanks. Ed: The story I heard is that German tank commanders boasted that they could take on 10 American Shermans for every one Tiger. The problem, they lamented, is that the Americans attacked with 11....
