3D Acceleration
3D Acceleration Features
Aside from the economic issues, there are a couple of other major areas where Myth 2 differentiates itself from the competition. Most notably, the game is 3D and takes advantage of acceleration provided by Direct 3D and Glide cards. The game is beautiful already in software mode (at high resolution - low res looks kinda blocky), but turning on 3d acceleration makes the graphics of Myth 2 as stunning as Nikki Taylor in an evening gown. Whoops, where did that come from? Almost turned into a PC Accelerator editor there.
Anyway, Myth 2 automatically recognizes any 3D capable cards you have installed so getting 3D up and running is a snap. I'm running an 8MB Matrox G200 paired with a 12MB 3DFX Creative Labs Voodoo 2 card, and Myth 2 recognized both cards. I was even able to choose which card Myth 2 would use and which type of acceleration I preferred (3dfx native with the Voodoo 2 or Direct3D - either card). The differences between each type of acceleration were negligible; all produced equally fast and gorgeous results. With a 3D card you can not only turn up the resolution to 1024x768 but also whip out the 3D fog which adds to the ambience a lot.
Myth 2 also supports 3D sound so if you have a 3D sound card, don’t forget
to turn on the option and try it out. The sound effects overall were
pretty immersive. You can hear birds chirping and other ambient sounds in
the environment around you when the cacophony of battle isn't drowning that
stuff out. In battle you'll hear the clank of swords on steel, the twang
of bowstrings being plucked, and of course, the dull *BANG* of a Dwarven
Molotov exploding. There is no music during matches to distract you from
the task at hand, but there is good mood music in between single player
missions and in the opening screen.
