Hardware Requirements
Hardware Reqs
As with most games coming out in '99, NASCAR 3 will require 3D acceleration. This time, NASCAR 3 will support all popular 3D accelerator cards, whereas its predecessor only supported Rendition 3D out of the box. As far as performance goes, Papyrus is targeting at least 30 frames per second (fps) out of the box on a Voodoo2-equipped Pentium. They're going to really put those 3D cards to work with all of the new visual effects including smoke, dust, dirt clumps, and dynamic skid marks, but it should be possible for users with weaker machines to turn off those effects to boost performance.
Force feedback?
With force feedback wheels gaining more popularity these days, you'd expect Papyrus to support them. However, Papy has been saying that force feedback will likely not be supported due to hardware latency issues. While we're working on getting an answer straight from the source (Papyrus), we expect them to eventually change their minds by release time. It probably won't be a big deal to serious racers, though, because it generally is distracting to drive with, especially in an enduring two-hour race.
Other Stuff
Most of the Winston Cup series tracks should be included (Sega owns the rights to Daytona, so no go there.) No fantasy tracks are expected. Papyrus is working on signing the real Winston Cup series drivers, but no word yet on exactly who will and won't be in there.
And what about NASCAR Racing edition 1999? The release of NASCAR Racing 1999 edition did little to whet the appetite for NASCAR fans, it being nothing more than a repackaged N2, including new tracks and a Craftsman Truck series, but using the same old tired engine.
The greatest part about playing NASCAR was its multiplayer experience. Learn all about it on
