Hero Hillbilly Hick
Nox is named for the world it is played on. The land, some decades ago, had endured a great war between the evil Necromancers and their undead armies vs. the mortal people of the South. The South won, thanks to a great hero armed with a mighty weapon that trapped the souls of the Necromancers in a special jewel. This hero conquered all the Necromancers except the baby Necro Hecubah, who he did not have the stomach to kill. To make sure that the weapon would never be cause for conflict among the three peoples of the South, and to forever rid Nox of the Necromancers, a mage broke the weapon into four pieces.

The first 3 pieces were divided among the victors of the war: the Warriors, the Conjurers and the Wizards. It was hoped that this would provide unity among them, forcing them to co-operate if anyone wanted to use the weapon. However, the 4th part - the jewel with the evil Necromancers' souls - was sent off into a distant, unknown dimension.

Trailer TV
Of all the places that gem could have ended up in, it landed on Earth. When the game picks up the story, the jewel is nothing more than a decorative piece on the TV set of Jack - a young man who seems destined to live his life out in a piece of tornado bait (mobile home). One night, the now-adult Hecubah casts a powerful spell to recall the gem - sucking poor Jack Mower and his TV along for the ride. The portal opens way up in the air over Nox and the gem speeds magically towards Hecubah, while poor Jack has nothing left but momentum and gravity to carry him along. Things look grim for Jack.

As amusing and unexpected it would have been to see Jack get splattered on the ground, Westwood decided it would be a bit hard to have a pile of bloody mush as a hero. Instead, Jack crashed into a floating air-balloon and traded in his TV for safe passage down to the ground. The captain of the airship will henceforth be with you from time to time, to take you to a pre-designated area once you're done with the current one. Why would he do that? Well, dear boy, to get out of Nox you have to save the world!
