Why Am I Here?
You're a marine, you don't question orders. You are sent on a mission to the Black Mesa Research Facility, 'just in case it happens.' Just as you're nearing it, big, bad alien flying mothers start taking apart your choppers (watch the outside during the intro sequence, it's pretty damn cool.) You crash though manage to stay alive, and now you have to get out of here... Yep, that's about the gist of it.

New Friends!
Now that the must-kill-marines reflex has been eliminated, you'll get to know your former tormentors a bit better. There's the medic with his obvious uses, the engineer who likes to light his cutting torch with a cigar (he also opens doors) and the grunts. These guys are all your good friends and it's very cool to not be the only one who's shot at any more (at least while your buddies are around :) Unfortunately, they don't appear much, and when they do, it's usually to serve a purpose and die, or they stay behind once they've done their jobs. It feels rather gimmicky, though when you run into black ops, you'll stop caring about the 'gimmicky' part.
There's a new security guard in town too - Otis. He seems a lot better in combat that Barney was, but he is a little slow from all those donuts.

New Enemies!
If you enjoyed Half-Life's assortment of creatures and creepy-crawlies, you're going to love OpFor. Think the regular marines were tough in Half-Life? Imagine their alien equivalents. Or how about a huge, tough alien that will crush you up close and fire a super-powerful ball of electricity from afar? Appropriately enough, this mini-BFG wielding beast is called the Voltigore. Oh these are just the beginning of the wonders you'll see.
On the human side, you'll get to meet the male counterpart for the agile female Assassins. The black ops guys are faster, tougher and smarter than regular marines. They also don't like you grunts all that much…
