Conclusions

Caveats

We already mentioned that the graphics are software rendered with the terrain being voxels mostly and the characters being polygon based. One thing to keep in mind here is that software renderers are almost completely CPU dependent, so the game must be played in lower resolutions like 320x 240 or 512x384. While the game looks great in screenshots, this can be a problem scaling up on larger 19" or 21" monitors where low resolutions in software mode look quite blocky and primitive. We couldn't figure out a way to reduce the window size in our early build but this will hopefully be an option on the final.

Summing it up

Overall Outcast looks to be a very unique player in the 3D action/adventure realm. Its engine gives the gaming world a fresh new look, and its gameplay has a bit of something for everyone with shooting action, NPC interaction, lots of items to pick up and use, and puzzle solving as well. We'll all be waiting anxiously for the final version to come, and if all the rough edges on the demo get smoothed out, Outcast should be something special!
