Overlord Interview (con't)
FiringSquad: What other unique features will the game have?
Lennart Sas: In Overlord we tried to reinvent many of the Action/RPG conventions. The typical home village is replaced by a 1500 foot high Dark Tower you build up during the game. You can acquire a mistress, servants and hold pitched battles with enemies you conquered in the comfort of your own dungeon to practice your skills.
For example, weapon crafting is done in your tower’s forge. Want a flaming sword? Well, just toss in a couple of hundred red minions into the smelter! And then head to the dungeon to practice your new toy on some prisoners!
FiringSquad: What can you tell us about the game’s art style and graphics?
Lennart Sas: A game where you can kill peasants, steal their souls and become a ruthless evil Overlord could get really grim if worked out in a serious realistic manner. We wanted to make it about all that, but also about having a great laugh.
So at the start of development we decided we needed to have a satirical tone that should be reflected in the graphics. We intended to make a make game where people have a smile (or grin) on their face - not repulse them.
Overlord is intended as a satire on classic fantasy. Many things are not as they seem, Halflings are mean gluttons, the Elves are lazy tree huggers, and the pious Paladin is a pervert! We also looked at areas outside of classic fantasy for inspiration, so you might catch hints of Gremlins and Dark Crystal.
FiringSquad: Will there be a demo released for Overlord and if so what will it contain?
Lennart Sas: A demo will be available prior to the game’s release. It will show the first section of the game including your awakening, the introduction to the tower and your first entry into the lands of the Halfling. It will feature the brown Minions only but should give players a great taste of what Overlord is all about.
FiringSquad: What is the current status of the game’s progress and when will it be released?
Lennart Sas: Currently we are making the final tweaks and the game will come out in June 2007 for the Xbox 360 and PC.
FiringSquad: Is there anything else you wish to say about your plans for Overlord?
Lennart Sas: We invite everybody to step into the boots of the Overlord. This game doesn’t fit comfortably into the confines of one particular genre, but does most certainly feel like a game that knows what it’s all about. We feel there is something special here for many types of gamers, whether it’s the intuitive and loyal horde of minions, the great humor and dialogue or satisfying people’s dreams about world domination. Check out the demo which is set to be released in June – and see what you think yourself!
