Final Verdict

Quake 4 is an improvement over Doom III, no doubt. But damn it, I’m pissed off about the multiplayer portion of the game. I’m absolutely happy with deathmatch and CTF but we’re spoiled, dammit, we expect more! Quake 4 just isn’t notably better than Quake III in multiplayer, while having the single worst server browser known to man.

On the other hand, the singleplayer portion is really, really good. It’s not Half-Life 2 but it’s far closer to that sparkling gem than it is to Doom III. Even Half-Life 2, I think, didn’t have friendly AI that was this good, though the enemies were more intelligent there. Anyone telling you that Quake 4 singleplayer sucks is just a trend whore, repeating the same old line from the Quake days because it’s expected of them.

If Q4 had one – just one – new and exciting game mode, and a functional server browser, it would definitely be an Editor’s Choice award winner, scoring over 90. As it is, we just can’t justify that.
