Interface

Look ma - no mouse!

As we already mentioned, one of Revenant's key features that set it apart from other similar games is a sophisticated fighting system. This calls for a heavy reliance on the keyboard; in fact, you almost never need to use the mouse! There are a couple notable exceptions; you'll want to use the mouse while shopping and while perusing your inventory. Your inventory, unlike most of the rest of the interface, is cumbersome and ill-designed. Your best bet is to purchase a number of 'pouches,' and use them to subdivide your belongings, lest they get too cluttered.

The focus on keyboard control in Revenant is a welcome change for those of us who hate using the mouse. The keyboard controls are set up to easily do everything you need; one hand on the numeric keypad for movement, one on the left-handed home keys for combat. You have your choice of three different attacks; either a slow powerful swing, a quick weak attack, or in-between. If you're taking up the defensive, you can either block or quickly dodge out of the way, and once you've gained skill, you'll learn special combat moves to add to your repertoire.

Level up!

One big gripe

The only major irritant of Revenant's control system is spellcasting. There are two ways to cast a spell; either pull out your mouse, scroll through your spellbook, then click the spell you want, or hit one of your pre-defined spell hotkeys. Sounds fine, right? It would be, if there were more than four spots for hotkey-ed spells! The first four function keys perform spell actions, while the fifth through ninth are 'belt' actions (generally potions / food). We would've preferred a different balance; after all, there are only really three different ways to heal yourself; regain mana, health, or both.

To be fair, though, once you come to grips with the fact that you can only have four different spells at your figertips at any given time, control in Revenant is a breeze and generally a pleasure to use. From the moment you jump into the game, you'll be ready to kill monsters, kill some more monsters, and even kill monsters! There are also options to talk to people, but we tried to avoid them.
