Graphics and Sound

Perky

Revenant's graphics may not be revolutionary, but they sure are a nice perk. Aside from the mega-cheesy waves crashing against the shore of the island, environments and NPCs generally look pretty swell. There are even plenty of extraneous terrain features to spice things up, like a huge decaying whale carcass. Yum!

For those of you with a sweet eye, Revenant delivers the goods as well. After all, no game with magic spells would be complete without crazy animations to accompany their casting. Unfortunately, the spells don't look all that stellar; the flames and explosions generally serve only to draw attention to the fact that graphics aren't necessarily the game's strong suit. We would have liked to see more translucency effects in spell casting.

Turn on the sound! Nah . . .

Probably the nicest thing to say about Revenant's sound is that the game is well suited to bringing your own tunes. The ambient music may as well have come from any of a hundred other games, so unless you're into generic 'mood-heightening' music, skip it. There are no important audio cues nor any interesting sound effects either, leaving only one thing: speech.

Unless you have a fetish for mediocre voice actors playing generic fantasy characters, the in-game speech is more of an irritant than anything else; not because it's bad, but rather, because it takes so darn long for people to say stuff! We like plot as much as the next guy, but that doesn't mean we have any desire to plod through a ton of dialogue that we could read fifty times faster and enjoy just as much. Don't get us wrong; the dialogue itself is not to be missed; while a lot of it is trite, there are plenty of moments that will cause you to laugh out loud. Still, you don't need to hear the voices to get the joke.
