Inspired by the Acclaim Comics / Hero title of the same name, the game centers on the dark figure for whom it was named. Shadow Man, aka Mike LeRoi, is a man who was turned by a voodoo priestess into the Lord of Deadside (this game's name for the world of the dead).

As the game begins, Deadside is threatened by an evil force, which is leading five now-undead serial killers. As Darkside's protector, Shadow Man is sent by his controller, the voodoo priestess called Mama Nettie, to stop the evil forces before they engulf the world of the dead. You take control of Shadow Man and the battle of good vs. evil is underway.
