Console Style
In general, there are two types of CRPGs you can play. Either they are console, or PC style. Console RPGs tend to focus on action, storyline and excitement at the expense of replay value and freedom. They are linear and their storylines try and play with our emotions. A perfect example of this would be the Final Fantasy series.

PC RPGs
PC users have, since the very beginnings of computer gaming, been used to freedom and choice. Console style RPGs weren't all that popular on the PC just because they were too limited, they denied the gamers the ability to do things that weren't planned or allowed for, in fear of breaking the story. Perfect examples of the freedom you can find in PC RPGs are Daggerfall and Fallout 2. They were huge games with no need to follow the main quest - or any quest - whatsoever. The criticism against PC style RPGs has always been that they lack focus and people get 'lost' within them.

Bucking the Trend
However, the introduction (and relative popularity) of Final Fantasy VII to the computer market seems to have gathered some attention, and console style RPGs are beginning to appear. The most notable one, complete with everything that a console game needs is Silver, from Spiral House/Infogrames.
