Graphics and Humor
Graphics and Style
The graphics in Darkened Sky are your standard 3D-accelerated DirectX fare. The artwork and creature design will be anything but standard, however. S&S has specifically set out to create creatures that don't look like anything else out there, in the same vein as Sacrifice. You won't see any run of the mill goblins or dragons here. Rather, Skittles is filled with creatures somewhere in between Phil Foglio and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac cartoons. We like it.
No, this isn't Alice.
Even the doors are scary.
The Lost Art of Humor
Simon and Schuster realize that you can't stick "Skittles" on a game and sell a million copies. That's why the designers have spent a lot of time working humor into the dialogue. There are already over 300 pages in the script, including the cut-scenes and jokes Sky makes. For example, when Sky picks up a key she says, "Wow, a key! If I were in an adventure game, this key would magically fit into a door at the end of the level. Oh wait, I am in an adventure game…" The entire game is filled with jokes on the absurdity of playing a third-person action game, solving jumping puzzles, and even using Skittles in a video game. It's nice to see a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, especially one based on candy. Funny dialogue goes a long way, just look at Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
Our first look is brief, but Skittles: Darkened Sky still has about seven months until its release. We'll have more coverage at E3 and the months to come.
