Introduction
This week the highly anticipated Spider-Man 3 hits movie theaters. Almost as anticipated is the Treyarch-Activision game adaptation which will once again give gamers a way to control Marvel's web-slinger through an open world Manhattan. FiringSquad got a chance to chat with the game's senior producer Anna Bunyik to find out more about their plans for Spider-Man 3.
FiringSquad: First, how hard was it to design Spider-Man 3 after the solid response to the open world design of Spider-Man 2?
Anna Bunyik: Spider-Man 2 gave us a great base. We already had a game that people enjoyed. The challenge was to give the player even more without compromising the things that Spider-Man 2 fans loved. We’ve got an awesome creative team at Treyarch, and they were up to the challenge. We went bigger and better – more missions, more storylines, more New York. And the villains introduced in the film didn’t hurt either.
FiringSquad: How much input does Sam Raimi have in the development of the game, if any?
Anna Bunyik: This is the third movie game we’ve done with Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures and they’ve been extraordinarily helpful with movie material and guidance. Their help is always key to making the game look and feel like the movie.
FiringSquad: How will the open world gameplay of the previous title be expanded in Spider-Man 3? Will New York be more detailed and have more locations available?
Anna Bunyik: We listened to the feedback of our previous titles. People love to swing around the city, but a lot of folks felt the gameplay got repetitive. That was where we focused the majority of our efforts when making Spider-Man 3. The missions are diverse and exciting, the city is definitely more detailed and not only have we expanded on the number of locations, we’ve also taken Spider-Man underground into the sewers and subways of Manhattan.
FiringSquad: How will the game handle Spider-Man's powers in the new game? Will there be additional abilities beyond what was introduced in Spider-Man 2?
Anna Bunyik: Spider-Man will still have all the great powers people have come to expect and then some. We’ve expanded on his webbing abilities a great deal, and spent a lot of time improving the combat system, re-building it from the ground up. But what we’re proudest of is how awesome it is to take the black suit out on the town.
FiringSquad: What other playable characters will there be in Spider-Man 3?
Anna Bunyik: I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise…
