Introduction

Giant Robot Fun

As a child of the 80s, I keep thinking back on the major themes in toys of the time. One recurring theme that keeps popping up is robots. Some robots transformed into vehicles like Go-Bots or the Transformers. Others could be pieced together to form a giant robot, like Voltron. However, the kinds of robots that were arguably the most fun to play with were the ones that had guns on them. Now think big: 20 - 100 ton walking robots with big guns, and you have what are termed "mecha." Still hazy? Pop in a tape of The Empire Strikes Back, note the two legged AT-STs and you have the general idea of what this wave of mecha games have in store for gamers. Out of the three major ones slated for market, Starsiege, from Dynamix, is the first one to reach retail.

A Bit of History

Starsiege is the continuation of the Earthsiege series of games that came out about 4 years ago. The robots you're piloting here are called HERCs, and they range in size from 20-80 tons. Fans of the original Earthsiege will remember piloting their HERCs in order to save the Earth from sentient robots called the Cybrids. Created by humans, the Cybrids revolted against humanity and began attacking Earth's cities. A desperate stand banished the Cybrids to the outer reaches of the solar system, and humans began rebuilding their cities.
