Interface

Heads Up! (Display)

The interface for Starsiege is simple, yet elegant enough to convey a wealth of information at a glance. At bottom left, the ring there shows you how much of your shield power remains (assuming you have a shield generator on board). Depending on your configuration, you can rotate the focus of the shield to any side. Towards the right bottom corner, another ring shows you more info. The radar in the center of the ring shows enemy vehicles, buildings, and friendlies as well. On the left part of the oval you'll see your current throttle status. A setting above the line means your HERC is accelerating forward, and anything below the line means you're in reverse. On the right side of the ring you'll see how much energy you have in reserve to power your items or the weapons on the HERC.

Note the HUD features

The top right shows a shadowed view of the enemy vehicle you've currently targeted. The figure will convey damage information on the enemy HERC. The top left gives you a shadowed view of your vehicle, and the various sectors on the figure will tell you your own damage information. Next to that is your weapons list, showing off which weapons you're carrying, which firing chains you've assigned them to, and how much ammo/charging you have left in each weapon. If you've taken damage to specific systems on your HERC like the leg servos or shield generator, that will show up as a text list next to the top right corner.

You can play third person too, but it's harder

Busting Caps

The center of the screen contains the crosshair (movable by your mouse), which can also be accompanied by targeting reticles and lead (how far ahead you have to aim) estimating reticles, depending on how sophisticated a targeting computer you included. The targeted enemy is boxed in red. You'll also see navigation indicators on your HUD based on any waypoints you set in the map or waypoints given to you in the mission briefing.

 Random Fact
Car manufacturers experimented with Heads Up Displays for cars in the 1980s. Production models of the Nissan Maxima had the speed of the car projected onto the bottom left hand corner of the windshield. They didn't really catch on though, so for now, HUDs remain widespread primarily in military and commercial vehicles like aircraft.
