Publisher: GT Interactive

Release Date: In a couple of weeks (it's gold!)

Total Annihilation Kingdoms, coming soon from Cavedog, is the sequel to the immensely popular Total Annihilation. A pioneer of sorts in the real time strategy realm, TA was one of the first RTS games to feature 3D graphics and real physics in its gameplay. With dozens upon dozens of units in the game (and new ones coming out every week for a time), TA offered limitless strategic options and was a big hit among strategy gamers. What does TA: Kingdoms bring to the table that's new for longtime Cavedog fans? To answer those questions, I had a chance to chat for a while with Cavedog's Joe Mullen about TA: Kingdoms while at E3.

Movin' out

Not a graveyard

For one thing, TAK will come with Boneyards support right out of the box. Before you get any nasty ideas in your head, let's explain what Boneyards is; it's Cavedog's answer to Blizzard's Battle.net. Basically, Boneyards is an online matchmaking service that can bring together up to 8 TAK players to play against one another. Boneyards has been live for a while now, with players of the original TA battling it out online. Besides that, Kingdoms boasts not 2 (TA, CnC), not 3 (Starcraft), but FOUR different sides with each with completely unique units.

 Random Fact
When Chris Taylor thought up the name of his company, it came down to Cavedog or Frozen Yak. They picked Cavedog, but on April Fool's day, they jokingly changed the name to Frozen Yak for a day. Try www.frozenyak.com. It will take you to Cavedog's site.
