Race Mode
Cruisin' for a bruisin'
In racing mode, you drive around an open course from checkpoint to checkpoint. The objective is to win the race, usually with help from the weapons that can be picked up at checkpoints. They can't destroy the other tanks, but they can knock 'em around and destroy theitr turrets. If this happens, the tank can't use weapons until the turret regenerates (when its ever-regenerating health reaches 100%).

Speaking of weapons, there are several. In addition to ammo for your tank, you can pick up one additional weapon, such as a rocket launcher or machine gun. The weapon is then mounted on top of your turret, and fired in conjuction with it. Since your turret's rate of fire is extremely slow, picking up additional weapons is essential to destroying (or simply dislodging) opponents.

Not just car[tank?]nage
Even though you are a tank, the emphasis in racing mode truly is on racing. Spend too much time trying to blow away the competition, and you'll find that most of them have whizzed right past you. Also, it's hard to stay on course when you're in turret view mode, because the camera is pointed wherever you're aiming your turret (though your movement may not be). Attacking opponents is best reserved for opportune moments, although this may change in later versions of the game, when long-range leader-killing weapons are implemented.
