The Jet Pack

Free as the birds

CalBear:
Every player in Tribes gets a jet pack which can be used for short flights or speed boosts. It's one of the most important aspects of game play that each player must master. I felt that the jet pack given to each player provided a great twist to the normal deathmatch dynamics, but sometimes it was more of a hindrance than a help. Due to a realistic physics engine I often found myself sliding down the mountain after a long jet pack jump. This gives a very unwelcome feeling of helplessness, but after a while you get used to it, and learn to control your jumps and landing speeds better to avoid those slides from happening.

Don't try this at home

Thresh: I appreciated the jet pack a lot more than CalBear did. One of the best things is being able to jump up and away from danger at a moment's notice. . This was key in wide open outdoors battles where the lack of a third dimension of movement could have made things slower than your grandma's Buick. Leaping up into the air forces your opponent to rely on some damned good aim to pick you off. The pack added a nice wrinkle to the usual "circle strafe until one of you falls down" routine, and having an energy limit on its usage kept it from becoming a total air war.

 Random Fact
In the late 80's (or was it the early 90's? we're getting too senile to remember), Disney released a movie called "The Rocketeer," based on a guy who invents a jet pack. As far as we can remember, the movie was a bust, both with the critics and at the box office.
