Team Play

There's no 'I' in team
Thresh:
The best part about Tribes is the myriad of game play features that make it a team oriented experience rather than a one man show. First of all, base defenses are very tough to penetrate. Aside from the enemy players who are guarding, there are automated and manned turrets distributed in and around the perimiter. All of these turrets can really lay the smack down, and lone hotshot is gonna find himself respawning back at his base in no time. Taking out those turrets and sensors often requires one player with a targeting laser to "paint" the target, and another infantryman with a mortar to pound it. Getting the flag almost always requires a coordinated effort by at three or more team members. If the bases are widely spaced apart, you'll almost certainly need to fly in with an APC or else it'll take a lifetime to stroll across the map.
Travel in style; hop in that heavy APC
CalBear:
Absolutely. I thought the inclusion of vehicles and transports was one of the best parts of the game. On many maps there's a vehicle launch pad where you can buy one of three types of vehicles. There's a 1- man scout ship that shoots missiles, and two types of armored personnel carrier. The light APC carries the pilot and two passengers, while the heavy APC carries a pilot and 4 passengers. Passengers can shoot from the APC, which means it can be a makeshift gunboat. Only light armored players are allowed to control a ship. Others may only ride as passengers.
When I fly an APC carrying a few of my teammates, I get this tense feeling. It's almost as if I'm really piloting this ship through battle and my teammates are depending on me to do it right and drop them at a good landing zone. Going on strafing missions with the faster Scout vehicle is a lot of fun too. When I'm blazing into enemy fire, sprinkling missiles around, all of a sudden the epic tunes of Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries come into my head and....
It looks like a motorcycle but the Scout flies and shoots rockets
Thresh:
No need to get overdramatic here, Bob.

Sorry, I just get carried away when I play Tribes. When I first sat down to play I just completely lost track of time and jumped from server to server playing for over five hours. There were so many things I wanted to try and so many roles I wanted to play. One thing I never really got to try was using the command interface. Most people use it to view the map and control turrets but it's hardly ever used to give out orders to other players. The reason is that pick up games are pretty informal, and no one is going to submit to anyone's command. I guess that aspect is reserved for clan matches, where things are more organized and clanmates would be more willing to take directions from a specific person who oversees the whole battle. Still, it's nice to know there's an interface there for a commander to issue orders and players to indicate they've received the directions and are carrying them out.
