Comments
On the Pentium 4 scene prices crept downward at a snail's pace. Most of the changes could be counted on one hand; we suspect the prices will drop considerably after the holidays. Our sweet spot for the P4 lands in the 1.7-1.8 GHz range.
It was rather surprising to see something happen on the PIII side. The Tualatin 1.26 GHz rolled onto the scene at a rather steep price point, as these CPUs are targeted for the server end. Should you still need an upgrade to an old P3 machine we'd recommend getting the 933 or 1 GHz. The 700E is a bit cheaper but for $20, you guarantee yourself solid performance and stability.
The Celeron line also saw a newcomer - the Celeron 1.2 GHz. We hear these CPUs have quite a bit of overclocking potential. The only problem being that the performance on these CPUs lacks regardless of being overclocked or not. Overclocking may yield more performance, but definitely not anymore than a 1.4 GHz Athlon - which comes at the same price point. We really do not recommend getting this line of CPUs unless you are performing a quick upgrade.
