Comments
Pentium IV prices are taking a tumble! No surprise as there is quite a glut. We still wouldn't recommend buying these processors, as they will be outdated rather quickly with the advent of socket 478, the new Pentium 4 variant.
We finally get a look at the new Pentium 4 prices this week. The socket 478 versions of the Pentium 4 do not differ much in price compared to their 423 counterparts. We do not have any prior pricing data as these things just popped onto the scene.
The Pentium III lineup went up slightly. We don't recommend building a new system from these CPUs, as there will never be an upgrade path, the Pentium III is a dead line. If you want a quick and painless upgrade you might consider them. If you do get one, we suggest you purchase the 700MHz chip. A year ago, many of these chips would overclock to 933MHz in a heartbeat. Nowadays, your chances of getting a good overclock are almost guaranteed.
The Celeron lineup falls under the same category as the Pentium III, they are dead. Only if you are really low on cash or your immediate upgrade paths are extremely limited would we recommend getting this processor. If your memory is PC100 capable, we recommend getting the Celeron 700 MHz, overclocking success has been very high with these chips, making the faster Celerons a moot point.
Wrap
Overall we would stick with the AMD CPUs for the time being. For the price it is really hard to justify getting a Pentium 4. That might change as soon as the P4X266 comes out, bringing DDR RAM support to the Pentium 4; no matter how much Intel dislikes this chipset, it can only help the ailing sales figures of the IV. Another thing to keep on the lookout for when deciding which CPU you want to get is the nForce.
