The Upgrade Pricing Guide
UPDATE 9/20
It's time for another price upgrade! We started including prices in our last update, and now we've added an "last" price column in addition to the "current" price for comparison purposes. We also added the Maxtor DiamondMax 6800 27.2GB hard disk to the list, and replaced the 3dfx Voodoo3 retail with the OEM version. We also tried calling up a few hardware manufacturers to find out what's up with the rising memory prices.
We've almost given up on Killerapp. The site still hasn't listed any of the items we requested (they don't even have PC133 SDRAM yet), and the listed vendor prices are hardly competetive (except for buy.com and a couple other retailers). We already accept the fact that Killerapp isn't the place to go to compare prices, but we did use it to compare similar products and now the site doesn't even have a complete list of products. If Killerapp doesn't add the new items by the time we start our next update, we'll drop the link and replace the column with something that will make better use of the chart real estate.
The unfortunate thing is that we personally know the creator of Killerapp, and before the buyout it was certainly one class act. Way to go, C|Net. Good job.
Let's make it last
Vendors change their prices too often to list a single online store for each item. Our old method resulted in a guide that was only useful for a couple days at the most. Hopefully our new guide will have a longer shelf life.
The list
Pricewatch vs. Killerapp
In general, Pricewatch will always have lower prices than Killerapp, but Killerapp has more reputable sites and a better interface. We like using Killerapp to compare products, and then checking for the best price on Pricewatch. Then we run the vendors with the best prices through
Reseller Ratings to see if they have a bad online reputation.
