Note from the editor: Wayne "D22-soso" Chiang is the current champion of the Starcraft: Brood War ladder, and a finalist in this month's upcoming Professional Gamers' League finals for Starcraft (that's vanilla SC, not Brood War). He's also distinguished himself in other RTS games like C&C and Warcraft 2 on Case's Ladder in the past. Gamers Extreme's real time strategy expert took some time out from his busy schedule to jot down some notes about how hardware can affect a top RTS player's performance. Not surprisingly, he discovered that the kind of hardware that is optimal for RTS is a bit different than for first person shooters.
Optimal hardware for real time strategy
Optimizing your hardware can be incredibly expensive, and most people have the common misconception that just because you have awesome hardware that that advantage will carry you and win the game. With this in mind, people shouldn’t be going out and buying the best products or most expensive products out there (in some cases the most expensive hardware isn’t the best). However if you are serious about competing online, I recommend that you at least purchase decent quality hardware, as you will have a significant disadvantage with inferior hardware for whatever game you play. While the hardware for RTS isn’t as demanding as FPS, there are certain elements that you might not know about optimizing your RTS performance.
