Winstone Benchmarks

Winstone Benchmarks

Notes

Winstone99 runs through several scripted real-world applications. It tests the complete system, everything from CPU performance to the speed of the hard disk. Unfortunately, we've been hearing from manufacturers that most current benchmarks don't accurately measure the true performance of the Coppermine, and Intel is working with benchmark developers to help create new tests that show the Coppermine's true strengths. For now, we'll have to settle for the Winstone Business test. Hey, the test uses real world programs, and we're not complaining.

The real world Winstone performance tests show the Coppermine's weakness -the smaller L2 cache. Winstone performs a lot of multithreading and multitasking operations between programs. The larger 512K L2 caches on the Katmai P3 and Athlon processors help reduce the number of costly cache misses. Then again, the beta 810e motherboard might be the culprit behind the score differences.
