Wipe the sleep from your eyes, boys and girls. After running through 20 different processor configurations, it’s safe to say that nearly any chip from either AMD’s or Intel’s current crop of shipping mainstream-and-higher products will deliver the goods in F.E.A.R. All of that extra AI and physics doesn’t exact a grueling enough load to tax modern processors, even while those game engine components contribute greatly to F.E.A.R.’s relatively believability (this is a game about the paranormal, after all).
Adding a load of extra memory won’t really do anything for you either. Although we were able to show minor improvements, on average, F.E.A.R. doesn’t demonstrate that same performance boost you get in Battlefield 2 with an NVIDIA graphics card and extra RAM. With that said, there are still plenty of reasons to go with 2GB of memory today, if you have the money.
The real answer is graphics, graphics, graphics. It doesn’t matter if you own the fastest video card on the market---two of them will nearly double your speed with all of the eye candy cranked up. Dropping the resolution and dialing down some of the knobs will improve performance, but it won’t minimize the game’s dependency on graphics horsepower.
As a side note, we had originally considered adding even more value-oriented processors to the mix. However, dropping to Athlon XP and Socket 478 Pentium 4 platforms would have also meant going for AGP graphics cards. If a GeForce 7800 GTX is pegged at 1024x768 with this game, we can’t imagine a GeForce 6800 Ultra would fare any better. Bottom line, if you want to play this game in its full glory, it’s time for an upgrade.
From the way things are shaping up for me in these first few levels, F.E.A.R may be the one game since Half-Life 2 to make buying new hardware truly worthwhile, too.

Batman: Arkham City PC Review Batman: Arkham City is the sequel to 2009’s smash-hit action game Batman: Arkham Asylum. As the name suggests, you will be reprising your role as the Caped Crusader and going against an even larger 'prison' filled with Gotham's criminals and villains. A textbook example on how to do a proper sequel, Arkham City takes what worked in the original, excised or improved upon what didn’t, and elevated everything to an even greater scope. The PC version suffered from a few months of delay, but in that time, Rocksteady worked closely to NVIDIA to implement some familiar technologies from the last game, such as PhysX and 3D Vision, along with new DirectX 11 optimizations. L.A. Noire Complete Edition PC Review L.A. Noire, as the name clearly states, is a video game built on the tropes of one of the greatest periods of American cinema: film noir. Developed by the now defunct Australian developer Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games, this title has been out on consoles for a full six months before finally making its way to the PC. Intel Core i7-3960X Sandy Bridge-E Performance Review
Today marks the launch date for Intel’s Sandy Bridge-E line of processors, a new family of high-end Core i7 products based on the LGA 2011 platform. This new socket is poised to replace the existing LGA 1366 specification used by the more powerful Nehalem and Westmere parts from the past couple years, specifically Bloomfield and Gulftown, the Core i7-9xx+ line of CPUs.
