Bare Bones System

What is bare bones?

KryoTech offers the Cool Athlon 800 as a bare bones system. Many of us are already familiar with normal bare bones systems that vendors tailor to the thrifty or hands-on consumer. These systems usually only consist of a case w/power supply, the motherboard, and the processor. Depending on how bare the system is, you might also get RAM, a floppy drive, and/or a CD-ROM. You select and purchase the missing components then put together the rest of the system yourself.

We usually don't like recommending normal bare bones systems to people, because vendors tend to include mediocre motherboards. Cases for these systems also lean towards the cheap don't-mess-with-me-because-I-will-give-you-gangrene models. Most of the time you will be better off building an entire system from scratch. Choosing and assembling three more components isn't very hard, and you'll be the one who decides which corners to cut.

What makes KyroTech's bare bones system different?

Yes, KyroTech's system is bare bones, but we don't have much of a choice here. The very nature of the KryoTech system eliminates the build it yourself option. Sure you can buy one of their standalone Renegade refrigeration cases for your system, but the Renegade only cools the CPU down to room temperature, not -40°C. If you want an Athlon 800, you have to buy their system.

As for motherboard choices, there aren't many right now, and you're not loosing much by letting KryoTech choose for you. Currently, the only Athlon motherboards available are the MSI 6167, the FIC SD11, and the Gigabyte GA-7IX. It's in KryoTech's best interests to choose the most stable motherboard, because, unlike vendors who sell mediocre systems, KryoTech wants customers to come back for repeat business. Our evaluation system came with an MSI 6167 motherboard, but Kryotech reserves the right to change motherboards as new models are released to give customers the best value.

An Athlon 600 processor rounds out the rest of system. The three component package with case/refrigeration unit, motherboard, and CPU sells for a hefty $2,200. You can buy a system directly from KryoTech, or from a KryoTech distributor.

What if I want a complete system? If you want the Athlon 800 performance, but don't want to go through the hassle of putting together an entire system, you can purchase a complete system from one of KryoTech's distributors.

Back! What is KryoTech's target market?     How's it run? Next!
