Overview
Followup to a winner
When we reviewed the Klipsch's Promedia v2.400 speakers two years ago, we were stunned. The Promedia's had an incredible sound at an even more incredible price - these speakers embodied the spirit of FiringSquad's Editor Choice award. Since we were still on the five-star rating system, we walked cautiously and gave the speakers 4.5 stars instead of the perfect 5 stars, but little would we know that two years later, the speaker system to beat is still the Klipsch Promedia v2.400. We've heard better sounding speakers that cost almost twice as much and some great speakers for those on a strict budget, but when it comes to value, the Klipsch Promedia v2.400 has remained the leader in the sweet spot of price and performance.

Even so, the v2.400 is not a perfect system. The original pre-amp added an audible hiss to some soundcards, several users complained of slightly bright output, and others had qualms with usability issues, such as the lack of a power switch. Over the last two years, we've had hints of Klipsch's multimedia future. Shortly after our original review, Klipsch began shipping an improved pre-amp. Just a few months ago, Klipsch demonstrated the "second generation" Promedia 2.1 which offered improved musicality through new crossovers.
When it came time to design the true successor of the Promedia v2.400, Klipsch chose not to start with a clean slate, but rather built upon the strengths of the original v2.400, and heeded customer complaints to correct the flaws of that venerable system. The result of these efforts is the Promedia 4.1.
