Game results

Let's look at the gaming results first, with a TNT thrown in for comparison as the current state of the art in 2D/3D cards. Before we start, I should note that the TNT is running at a very mild overclock of 100mhz instead of 90mhz. Ironically, the Rage128, originally slated for release at 100Mhz, has been pushed back to 90Mhz.

In response to this, ATI says:

ATI does not comment on the actual clock speeds of it products but we have achieved the target clock speed for the RAGE FURY product.

From what we've heard, the actual silicon of the shipping product may be different from the preliminary version we were given to test.

Turok Benchmark
Resolution Rage128 RivaTNT 100Mhz
640x480 109.0 112.7
800x600 108.6 111.7

Quake 2 3.20
Resolution Rage128 (16bbp/32bbp) RivaTNT (16bbp/32bbp)
640x480 54.0 53.2 75.2 63.6
800x600 47.0 45.5 61.6 44.0
1024x768 30.0 30.0 40.5 27.0

Viper Racing
Resolution Rage128 RivaTNT 100Mhz
800x600 55.1 40.8
1024x768 108.6 55.6

Dethkarz
Resolution Rage128 (16bbp/32bbp) RivaTNT (16bbp/32bbp)
640x480 49.1 49.01 59.31 55.42
800x600 43.88 37.49 53.12 37.36
1024x768 30.46 30.03 34.40 22.6

As you can see, the Rage 128 runs neck and neck with the TNT in most of the games, even with the latter overclocked. With future driver updates, there should be almost no difference between the two.

 Quick Facts
Remember, when playing Quake II, adjust your desktop color depth to match your desired rendering depth. On a TNT, 16-bit yields a noticeable improvement in framerate. On the Rage128, the difference is minimal.
