Zalman keeps up with current power hungry CPUs by changing its CPU cooler design once again. Its 3 heatpipes, a first for Zalman CPU coolers, successfully remove heat from even the most overclocked CPU. The all-copper design was passed down from previous models. The smooth polished base is a rare sight among coolers, so that is another plus, and shows the quality of the product. Zalman also lives up to its CNPS name. The 9500 was extremely quiet, barely audible in a silent room. This makes it very suitable for an HTPC (Home Theater PC) or similar.
Along with the cooler redesign, came easy mounting. While previous versions of the CNPS coolers (including the CNPS9500 LED) required removal of the motherboard, the 9500 only has 3 parts total: the heatsink/fan unit, the mounting hook, and lever. Installation should be less than a minute to do everything. The FAN MATE 2, Zalman’s mini-fan controller, is included with the cooler, as it has been for many years with CNPS products.
In terms of bang for the buck, the Zalman leaves a bit to be desired. The CNPS9500 is among the most expensive air coolers at $55 shipped online, yet it only shaves 9C off of the stock cooler’s best. Competitors have equivalent (or better) coolers for less money that may deliver better performance. We will cover them to see exactly how they stack up in a later roundup.
Also, keep in mind that this cooler is much better suited for overclocking more expensive CPUs. Since most single-core CPUs like our AM2 3000+ sell for less than $100, paying another $50+ is definitely not justified: it would be much easier to just buy a more expensive CPU and forget overclocking to save heat and time. However, if you own a dual core CPU, where the price increments between various X2 models is far greater, an aftermarket air cooler is a little more practical since overclocking your X2 4200+ to FX-62 speeds for instance can save you a lot of money.
