Nick Hornby was joking when he wrote that an individual's tastes were more important than what sort of person he is, but let's face it – we judge people by their tastes all the time. In the gamer world, someone's preferences become a sort of shorthand into what kind of gamer they are – how “sophisticated” their game tastes are, if they have a sense of video game history, what side of the holy and eternal PC/console division they sit on, and whether they are Japanophile anime-watching aliens or upright American patriots.

This classification-by-preference is silly, reductive, over-simplistic, and oh so fun to do. So here are some of my personal favorites in gaming, literature, and music. I leave it to you to piece together what these choices might say about me. I've even put together some meaningless charts and graphs to help you do this.

Games – Fallout 2, Grim Fandango, Planescape: Torment, System Shock 2, Homeworld, Allegiance, Deus Ex, Guitar Hero, Dreamfall, Galactic Civilizations 2

Authors – David Foster Wallace, Michael Chabon, Dave Eggers, David Sedaris, George R. R. Martin, Lorrie Moore

Music – The Gotan Project, The Killers, The Real Tuesday Weld, Nick Cave, Nick Drake, Gorillaz

» Ok, Here are mine...
Games: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Shogun: Total War, Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising, NOLF, Deus Ex and many more.

MMORPGs: EVE, Tale in the Desert, R.O.S.E., Shadowbane, Silkroad and now, Flyff.

Literature: The Bible, Dune, LotR Trilogy, Gormenghast Trilogy and anything historical.

Music: All over the map with this one. Just about anything BUT rap and country.

As for the PC/Console debate, PC wins hands down. I wouldn't take a game-console as a gift. :P
