I've been asked why I don't attend launch parties, or wait in line for the next Big Game to come out, or 'pre-order' video games. To my friends, I tell this story (edited for content, length, and to fit your Television Screen): The year was 2004. Fable, The One Game To Rule Them All was about to be released. I had followed its development with the fervency to be catalogued as its own religion. Make no mistake, It was going to be mine. Upon watching the shipment arrive to my local Babbages (where I had pre-ordered said game) I was -- and don't think me strange -- giddy. Very Giddy. Passersby could have mistaken me for someone who had just won the lottery.

I think Moyrenux peed in my wheaties. Fable and I were together for but a small time, 12 hours to be exact, after which I realized my mistake; buying the hype, and not the game. Had I waited just a few scant days, there would have been reviews pouring out from jaded gamers across the interweb, telling of the rich failure that was Fable. You see, dear reader; when I think of an 'open-ended' game, I think of Morrowind, I think of Oblivion. I do not think of Fable, with its paths that you cannot stray from, or its abject linearity.

So I guess now you will be more cautious about falling for the hype in the future?

I feel ya. Fable was a letdown, I assume many expected a sandbox type of game. It's a solid action/adventure, but leaves a lot to be desired. Too much talk and little doing. Heck, I bought my original Xbox for the numerous games with potential. Quite a bit turned out to be less than stellar.
