After I beat the game I decided to go wandering around (made a save right before the NPP). Exploring Pripyat I found a theature (just south of the stadium) FULL of mono's. At first I thought it was a bug, but it ends up they were all sitting on their legs, kinda bobbing back & forth. At least 5 of them. They were around some giant wooden doll (or something) similar looking to "Burning Man". It looks like they were worshiping it!

So much for them worshiping the monolith. :)
