I'm another one of the folks who've read this site since the Thresh days. Heck, I remember heavily consulting FS when I put together my first home-built rig maybe 7 or 8 years ago. This contest was simply my impetus to register an account and start posting. In any case, I wouldn't worry too much about a new editor defaulting on his or her responsibilities. FS isn't going to give away the bank without a legally binding contract, and I doubt the cash is going to be advanced before the writer's work is published. I agree with the others. I was actually there around 2000-2001, when it was still called "Thresh's Firing Squad". :) I had three regular sites visited around then - Tom's Hardware (didn't even have its own domain at the time - was sysdoc.pair.com), Sharky Extreme, and here. The site actually started up in December of 1998, for those of us keeping score... Points to anyone who has been around that long. ;) » Login to reply to this

i think you're being a little paranoid. this contest was advertised on a lot of other high-traffic sites. i know that's how i found it, and i was no FS.com regular. in any case i highly doubt such a well-spoken person as the winner of this contest would be the type of person to just ninja-loot the prize and vanish. and they're not taking any more of a risk than any other company making a new hire. i'm sure they'll have the winner's details, financial and personal, so he can't just pull a genie and blink out of sight. and frankly, if the FS regulars wanted to win, well, they should have entered. looking over the post counts, nobody is anywhere near yours. looks like we all came via other sites' links or word of mouth. i think part of the reason for this contest was to bring more traffic anyway, and i think it's worked wonderfully. » Login to reply to this

I can't speak for other poeple... but I have been visiting (lurking) on Firingsquad.com for a long, long time. This contest game me a reason to post here and join the community and also exposed the mBlogs and other features that I did not know existed. However, just because people have low post counts, it should not call into question their ability to write and commit. Obviously some of us just half assed the contest and submitted it, however, a lot of us tried the hardest. Remember, this contest is about discovering the best writers, not anything else, and if you look at it that way, post count doesn't matter at -all-. » Login to reply to this

as long as they do it to everyone the end effect should be that everyone's scores should remain relative. as for their own, well, i like to think that the types of people that do this probably aren't fantastic writers anyway. » Login to reply to this  CanadaDave (303)   Mar 01, 2007 - 05:04 am Honestly, there were one or two entries which I'd say I suspected of that in Round 1.. it's unfortunate, but I take solace in the fact that if I do manage to make Round 2, there will be some softer ones mixed in with the really strong ones that legitimately made the cut. Regardless, it wasn't many - like I said, one or two out of 15. Take it as a compliment - the higher vote count people have more downvoters to offset the scores they got legitimately. :) » Login to reply to this
